Inside story of the UWA Online Student Journey Project

Christmas wind-up

Posted by lisacluett on 24th December 2008

With so many things happening and so little time this is the last blog post for  the year (UWA closes at lunch today and reopens on 6th Jan).  The Online Student Journey Project is poised for a HUGE 2009 with conference presentations to prepare, guest blogging activities to fire up, a UWA Web 2.0 networking event to organise, a training materials to write and a zillion other things to do.

Early initiatives for 2009 include a Student Services Flickr album (with associated training and protocols), SitePal replacing Vokis (to remove banner ads), progressing our iTunesU presence and starting video compilations for study break workshops  Plus I’ll be exploring uses for Wordle, SketchUp, Make Me a Cartoon, Wink and many more applications ready for the onslaught of 2009.

Until the New Year then….

UWA and Google Earth

Posted by lisacluett on 18th December 2008

UWA Winthrop Hall seen through Google EarthThe Online Student Journey project takes me to some pretty interesting places – and yesterday it was the Google Earth project and the UWA Virtual Universe Project both coordinated by Jay Jay and Chris Thorne through the UWA School of Physics.

Of all the 3D Google Earth images in Western Australia, 98% of them are of the UWA campus (which is why the land surrounding the campus looks so flat!) thanks to the efforts of this project.  SketchUp (a Google tool) is used to create the buildings which can then be used in a number of platforms including Seconf Life (after some adapting), Virtual Universe and Google Earth.

Anyone can see the 3D project – just download/open Google Earth, navigate to 35 Stiurling Highway Nedlands and make sure you check the ‘3D Buildings’ box Click in this box to see the 3D buildings
